PM Modi Pitches Support Fund, Skills Partnership For Global South At G7 Summit

PM Modi Pitches Support Fund, Skills Partnership For Global South At G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (17 June) urged the creation of fresh international support mechanisms to help developing nations weather global shocks, stressing that the strain of supply-chain disruptions should not fall unevenly on the world's weakest economies.

Modi is in Evian-les-Bains, France, attending the Group of Seven (G7) summit alongside other global leaders.

In a post on X, he said he spoke at the Outreach Session on "Reviving a Balanced, Shared and Sustainable Economic Growth for All," where he contended that growth cannot be measured purely through gross domestic product or trade figures. "The real question is - Growth for whom, with whom and in what direction?" he said.

The Prime Minister said India's own development journey demonstrated how shared growth could turn aspiration into reality, describing it as a story of inclusion, scale and democratic empowerment.

He noted that India's approach drew from "sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas, sabka prayas," reflected in its G20 Presidency, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and other initiatives.

Framing India's case around Global South concerns, Modi warned that disruptions in fuel, fertiliser and food supply chains stemming from the West Asia crisis would continue to hit these nations for a long stretch.

"If we genuinely seek to strengthen international solidarity, the most vulnerable countries should not be left to bear the burden of these crises alone," he said, calling on international financial institutions to build mechanisms helping developing economies stay resilient.

He also sought broader connectivity tie-ups beyond existing corridors, asking whether IMEC-like projects could extend to Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands.

Combining G7 capital, Indian talent and Global South ownership, he proposed an International Mobilisation Partnership for Accelerating Connectivity and Trade (IMPACT), along with a Global Skills Partnership focused on skill mapping and trusted skilled mobility.
