Construction has finally begun on the ropeway project at Sangam, marking a key milestone after years of planning and procedural delays.
The work is now actively progressing in Arail near Triveni Pushp, where pillars for the first ropeway station are currently being erected.
The Rs 210 crore project is being executed by the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India.
Rajasthan-based Ravi Infra Build has been tasked with construction and will additionally operate the ropeway upon completion. NHLML will fund 60 per cent of the project cost, while the remaining 40 per cent is being invested by the private partner.
The ropeway will link Arail and Parade, easing travel across the Sangam and improving connectivity for tourists, pilgrims and residents. A station is planned on both ends of the river.
Work along the Sangam riverbank in Kachhar will begin only after the conclusion of the Magh Mela 2026, officials said, to avoid disruption during the annual religious gathering. Construction activity at the Sangam ghat is also expected to start after the mela.
Initially, Ravi Infra Build had begun preparations to start work from the Parade side and had set up a camp there on 26 October. However, the Army halted activity as no approval had been granted to construct on defence land.
After negotiations, the plan was revised and work commenced from Arail instead.
Recent discussions between Army authorities and district officials have resulted in a tentative agreement, under which equivalent-value land will be provided to the Army in exchange. An MoU is expected to formalise the arrangement.
The ropeway is expected to be completed within two years.
