Pune Municipal Corporation Greenlights Installation Of Entrance Gates At Major City Entry Points

The standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a long-pending proposal to build entrance gates at key points where major roads enter the city, the Hindustan Times reported .

The plan, which had been stuck in deliberations for years, will now finally move to the execution stage.

The gates will come up along some of Pune's busiest corridors, including the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, Solapur Road, Bengaluru Highway, and Ahmednagar Road.

Several cities across Maharashtra and other parts of India already have similar welcoming structures at their boundaries.

Standing committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale said, "Pune is a historical city and the second largest in the state. Considering its importance, the civic body has approved the erection of entrance gates at major entry points. The standing committee has given its nod for the project."

The idea had been on the PMC's table for a considerable period but could not take off due to repeated delays.

Wednesday's approval has now cleared the path for the project to proceed.

However, the execution may require coordination with central agencies. A senior civic official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "As most of the entry points fall along national highways, the PMC will have to coordinate with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for execution of the project."

In a separate decision during the same meeting, the standing committee approved extending a land lease in the Nana Peth area to the Depressed Class Mission Society of India.

The organisation has been occupying the plot for several years, and with the previous agreement having lapsed, the PMC has now renewed the lease for another 30 years under its updated land lease policy.
