Pune witnessed a major infrastructure milestone today (8 March) as the much-awaited double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk opened for public use.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the Baner-side arm through an online ceremony, with Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol in attendance.
The flyover has a total length of 1.70 kilometres including ramps, with a 1,112.52-metre viaduct forming the main elevated stretch.
It features a unique single-pier design with vehicular traffic on the lower deck and the Pune Metro Line 3 corridor on the upper deck.
The project, constructed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, replaces outdated structures at University Chowk and in front of E-Square.
The newly opened E-Square to Baner Road stretch completes a key bidirectional connectivity link for commuters heading toward Baner and the western IT suburbs from the city centre.
Previous phases included the Aundh-Shivajinagar arm opening in August 2025. The remaining Pashan-side ramp is in its final stages, with completion expected in the coming months.
Key features include two-lane up-ramps for traffic moving from Aundh and Baner towards Shivajinagar, and a three-lane flyover from Shivajinagar towards Baner and Pashan.
A 55-metre steel girder span at University Chowk designed to prevent disruption to traffic movement at the junction represents a notable engineering achievement.
The completion is expected to reduce travel time from Baner and Aundh to Shivajinagar by at least 15 to 20 minutes.
The opening of the double-decker flyover is expected to bring significant relief to daily commuters travelling through University Circle, which serves as a critical gateway linking western Pune with the city centre.
