Revised DPR For Thiruvananthapuram Metro To Be Submitted Within Weeks: Report

Swarajya 1 week ago

The Thiruvananthapuram Metro project is moving closer to the next stage of approval, with the revised Detailed Project Report expected to be submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation within the coming fortnight, as per a Times of India report .

Once the report is handed over, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) will undertake a technical review before forwarding it to the Kerala government and subsequently to the Centre for final clearance.

KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera confirmed that the report was revised following directions from the Union government to ensure alignment with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrating transport infrastructure across different modes.

"DMRC will submit the revised DPR to KMRL within two weeks. Once we receive it, KMRL will examine the report, which will take around 15 days. If there are no major issues, it will be forwarded to the state govt for approval before being sent to the Centre for final sanction," Behera was quoted as saying by TOI.

The updated DPR incorporates the finalised Phase-I corridor stretching from Pappanamcode to Kazhakootam passing through major city landmarks including Thampanoor, MG Road, Kesavadasapuram and the Government Medical College.

The route is designed to serve some of the capital's busiest residential, commercial and institutional zones, including the Secretariat, Technopark, central railway station and major bus terminals.

Officials believe the metro system will play a crucial role in easing pressure on Thiruvananthapuram's heavily congested north-south transport corridor while providing a reliable and environmentally sustainable alternative to road travel.

The revised report also includes changes aimed at improving multimodal connectivity, reducing land acquisition requirements and strengthening projected passenger demand estimates.

The report indicates that the metro depot is likely to be established on Kerala University land at Kazhakootam.
