Rs 189.79 Crore Mizoram Ginger Mission To Integrate 20,000 Farming Households Into Global Supply Chain

Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma yesterday (13 May) launched the Mizoram Ginger Mission, a Rs 189.79 crore convergence-led initiative aimed at transforming ginger cultivation and value chain development across the state.

The mission brings together schemes from multiple ministries including Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Rural Development, and Food Processing Industries, alongside NABARD, ICAR, APEDA and private investors.

Scindia highlighted a stark disparity in farmer earnings, noting that while Geographical Indication-certified Mizo Ginger contains six to eight per cent oleoresin compared with the global average of around three per cent, farmers currently receive only Rs 8-15 per kilogramme even as the value chain reaches over Rs 500 per kilogramme in international markets.

The Minister positioned the initiative as the 'Mizo Ginger Movement', anchored on four strategic pillars: convergence, value addition, branding and market integration.

The mission will deliver one integrated processing hub at Mualkawi in Champhai district, the state's highest ginger-producing area, alongside three spoke centres at Tualcheng, Vaphai and Zotlang.

Over 30 strategic interventions are planned, with the integration of nearly 20,000 farming households into a unified value-chain ecosystem built on traceability, quality assurance and farmer-led value creation.

Scindia outlined a clear global vision for Mizo Ginger, targeting entry into Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern and European markets.

The Minister said success would be realised when Mizo Ginger becomes available on global shelves, traceable to individual farmers and delivering direct economic benefits to them.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed appreciation to the Ministry of DoNER, calling the mission a defining moment that recognises Mizoram's unique strength in pharma-grade ginger and converts it into a structured pathway for farmer prosperity.

Mizoram was declared the 'Ginger Capital of India' by NITI Aayog in December 2025, recognising the state's reputation for producing premium-quality ginger.

The mission is expected to deliver a sixfold increase in farmer value realisation, sharp reduction in post-harvest losses and international branding of Mizo Ginger whilst creating sustainable rural livelihoods across the northeastern state.
