India has approved the country's first Point-in-Space instrument approach procedure for helicopter operations at Undavalli Heliport in Andhra Pradesh.
The government announced the approval on 1 July, marking a significant milestone in India's aviation sector.
The PinS procedures use advanced satellite-based navigation technology to enable helicopters to conduct safe and precise instrument approaches to heliports that do not have conventional instrument landing infrastructure.
The technology is particularly beneficial during adverse weather conditions and in areas where ground-based navigation aids are not available.
Developed by the Airports Authority of India and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the PinS procedure has been designed in accordance with DGCA regulations and the International Civil Aviation Organization Standards and Recommended Practices.
The system allows pilots to navigate to a predetermined point in space using satellite guidance, from where they can either land visually if weather permits or continue under instrument guidance.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu described the development as marking "the beginning of a new era in helicopter operations by significantly enhancing flight safety, operational efficiency and all-weather accessibility."
The minister acknowledged the coordinated efforts of the Airports Authority of India, DGCA and the state government of Andhra Pradesh in achieving this historic milestone.
He noted that authorities recently concluded the first phase of this year's Char Dham helicopter operations successfully without any incident, supported by upgraded technological infrastructure.
The approval reinforces the Government's vision of modernising aviation infrastructure through Performance-Based Navigation, expanding the use of indigenous satellite-based navigation technologies and aligning India's aviation ecosystem with global best practices.
The approval is expected to pave the way for the development of similar PinS procedures across the country, benefiting emergency medical services, disaster relief operations, tourism, offshore activities, pilgrimage services, corporate aviation, and regional connectivity.
The PinS technology represents a significant advancement for helicopter operations in obstacle-rich environments such as hospitals and mountainous regions.
Unlike conventional procedures that require expensive ground-based navigation infrastructure at every heliport, the satellite-based system offers a more cost-effective solution whilst enabling operations in remote and strategically important locations.
The technology is particularly relevant for India's diverse terrain, where helicopters frequently operate in challenging conditions ranging from Himalayan peaks to coastal areas.
