Disney Plus is Planning a National Treasure Series for the Service
All of our favourite movie National Treasure is all set to make a comeback, thanks to Disney. The company has been really pushing it to bring out different kinds of content, especially things from the past. Thus, we now have a National Treasure movie and TV series in the works at Disney+.
Producer for the original National Treasure and its sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Jerry Bruckheimer revealed the news in an interview with Collider.
'We're certainly working on one ['National Treasure'] for streaming and we're working on one for the big screen,' Bruckheimer said. 'Hopefully, they'll both come together and we'll bring you another 'National Treasure,' but they're both very active . The one for Disney Plus is a much younger cast. It's the same concept but a young cast.'
As mentioned above, Disney+ has really been into creating adaptations of well-regarded film series for the service. Nation Treasure will join the likes of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Home Alone, whose reboots will be coming to Disney+ in the near future. Apart from this, the streamer already has multiple Star Wars projects in the pipeline. These include a series about Obi-Wan Kenobi, one about Cassian Andor, and a second season of The Mandalorian. Apart from these, there are multiple Marvel series coming as well, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki.
The news for the TV series comes just three months after Bruckheimer and Disney announced that they were making National Treasure 3. Join the team will be screenwriter Chris Bremner who will be writing the script for the sequel.
Although not much is known about the series as Bruckheimer did not go into too many details, the mention of a younger cast does make it clear that Disney might want to rope in younger audiences for the National Treasure franchise.
Moreover, both the film and series seem to be in the early stages of production at the moment. Bruckheimer said, 'The film version is being written right now, and the television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and we have an outline of the future episodes.' That does give hope to the fans of the franchise.
The original National Treasure film starred Nicholas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian, cryptologist and treasure hunter. He goes on a quest to find a war chest hidden by the Founding Fathers during the Revolutionary War. Along with him, the movie also starred Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel. The second film focused on Benjamin trying to clear his ancestor's name who was implicated in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Both the films were highly successful and made $804.9 million at the Box Office on a budget of $230 million.
However, it is not yet clear as to who the creators are thinking of casting for the third instalment of the National Treasure franchise. On the other hand, Bruckheimer has stated that it would be the same cast. That remains to be seen as more information regarding the movie turns up.
