Hyderabad: Doctors at Medicover Hospitals, Sangeeth, Secunderabad, successfully performed a complex microsurgical replantation of a near-total amputated left distal forearm, saving the limb of a patient following a severe traumatic injury.

The patient, Mallesh, arrived at the emergency department with his forearm nearly amputated, attached only by a small soft tissue bridge. The injury involved complete damage to major blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and both forearm bones.

The trauma surgery team, including specialists from Plastic Surgery and Orthopedics, immediately undertook an emergency surgery that lasted around seven hours. The procedure involved bone stabilisation with plates, repair of the ulnar artery and veins to restore blood flow, tendon reconstruction, and precise nerve repair.

Following the surgery, the patient showed encouraging signs of recovery, including a warm hand and good capillary refill, indicating successful restoration of blood circulation. He is currently stable and under close monitoring, and will undergo staged rehabilitation and physiotherapy, Dr K Abhinav Kumar, Plastic Surgeon, who led the surgery, said.
