Peak XV's Surge raises seed cheque cap to $5 mn, looks beyond Asia

Peak XV's Surge raises seed cheque cap to $5 mn, looks beyond Asia

The Arc 1 week ago
Peak XV Partners' seed-stage programme, Surge, is increasing its maximum cheque size from $1.5 million to nearly $5 million, more than tripling its initial investment per company since the 2019 launch.
"When we lead the seed round, our goal is to give you [startups] enough capital to launch your product, reach product-market fit, build a team and get to a set of metrics that help you raise Series A," Peak XV managing director Rajan Anandan told The Arc. The move follows the VC firm's $1.3 billion fundraising earlier this year, its first independent effort since separating from US parent Sequoia Capital in 2023. Peak XV was earlier called Sequoia Capital India. The $1.3-billion corpus has been split across three funds: India Seed, India Venture and Asia-Pacific. The last of these expands Peak XV's earlier Southeast Asia mandate, allowing it to invest selectively in Japan, South Korea and some other regions.

Surge, Anandan said, is also looking to include more global companies in its cohorts. Surge's highly valued alumni include enterprise data collaboration platform Atlan, worth $750 million, Singapore-based eSim co Airalo worth $1 billion and digital bookkeeping startup Khatabook, valued at $600 million. Fabless semiconductor player Mindgrove and employee healthcare platform Plum are among other notable bets. D2C brand Minimalist was acquired last year,
giving Peak XV over 10x returns.
