The latest breakthrough came on Wednesday night, when the Government Railway Police seized counterfeit currency worth Rs 7.37 lakh and arrested two persons from Platform No. 1 of Kamakhya Railway Station.

The accused, identified as Dayal Das (59) and Gulab Shaikh (50), both residents of Pakur district in Jharkhand, were apprehended around 9.30 pm in an operation supervised by Assistant Sub-Inspector Yadav Chetia.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo had allegedly procured the counterfeit notes from an unidentified source in the Rajgarh area of Guwahati, buying fake currency with a face value of Rs 7.37 lakh for Rs 2 lakh.

"They were reportedly planning to transport the notes to Jharkhand," an official said.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly disclosed that the trade is part of a larger organised syndicate operating across multiple states, and police are now working to trace the source and identify other members of the network.

In a separate operation the same day, Dispur Police seized Rs 2.56 lakh in counterfeit currency from two suspected traffickers in the Six Mile area.

Acting on specific intelligence, a police team intercepted a vehicle (AS-01-PC-8433) near Nagaland House, within Dispur Police Station's jurisdiction.

The occupants, identified as Debojit Deori and Ajay Biswakarma, both residents of Deorigaon in Dhemaji district, were taken into custody.

"During preliminary enquiry, they were found to be habitual offenders allegedly involved in the circulation and trafficking of FICN," a Dispur Police official said.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a black backpack containing eight bundles of counterfeit Rs 500 notes, with a total face value of Rs 2.56 lakh, along with other incriminating materials.

During interrogation, Biswakarma allegedly claimed that counterfeit currency worth nearly Rs 100 crore is being circulated through an organised racket operating from the Bongaon-Mangalda area of Lakhimpur, a claim police said they are working to verify.

The latest seizures came a day after Dispur Police busted another counterfeit currency racket in the Six Mile-Panjabari area on June 30, recovering fake currency worth Rs 10.90 lakh.

In that operation, police arrested Anuj Gupta, Mahesh Shukla and Roshan Gupta, who were travelling in a vehicle bearing registration number UP35 BV 8240. Officials said the trio had travelled by road from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and were intercepted after being found moving suspiciously in the locality.

The successive operations have raised concerns over Guwahati emerging as a key transit point for counterfeit currency syndicates with inter-state links.

Police said further investigations are underway to identify the source of the fake currency, verify claims made during interrogation, and dismantle the larger network behind its circulation.
