Passengers have been advised to verify their departure and arrival terminal details with their respective airlines before travelling to the airport to avoid any inconvenience.

Airport authorities said the transition is aimed at streamlining operations, improving efficiency and enhancing the overall passenger experience.

They added that all necessary arrangements have been put in place to facilitate a seamless shift while prioritising passenger comfort and convenience.

Travellers have also been urged to reach the airport well ahead of their scheduled departures and follow the latest travel advisories issued by their airlines for a hassle-free journey.

The move follows the commencement of Air India and Air India Express operations from the newly inaugurated Terminal 2 earlier this year, significantly strengthening air connectivity in the Northeast.

The first flight to arrive at the new terminal was Air India's AI 879 from Delhi, while its return service, AI 880 to Delhi, became the airline's inaugural departure from T2.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Terminal 2 on December 20, 2025. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore, the terminal has been designed to double the airport's annual passenger handling capacity to 13.1 million.

Beyond its expanded capacity, the terminal has also drawn international acclaim after being named among the World's Most Beautiful Airports List 2026 by Prix Versailles, one of the world's most prestigious architecture and design awards.

Inspired by the Kopou Phool (Foxtail Orchid), Assam's state flower, the terminal incorporates extensive use of locally sourced sustainable materials, including multiple varieties of bamboo, reflecting the region's cultural identity alongside modern aviation infrastructure.

Even as the new terminal becomes fully operational for international services, plans are already underway for further expansion.

In December last year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Assam government was considering construction of an additional terminal at Guwahati airport to cater to the anticipated rise in passenger traffic and the airport's growing role as the Northeast's aviation hub.

Meanwhile, airport authorities have also confirmed that automated public announcements in Assamese will be introduced at LGBI Airport within the next 10 days.

The update was shared by retired IPS officer Kuladhar Saikia on social media after airport authorities informed him through an email.

The decision follows a joint representation submitted on June 26 by Saikia, retired IPS officer Jyotirmoy Chakrabarty and retired Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Mukul Chandra Gogoi, who had urged the Chief Airport Officer to include Assamese in all public announcements.

The trio had pointed out that announcements at Terminal 2 were being made only in English and Hindi despite the Ministry of Civil Aviation's guidelines encouraging the use of regional languages.
