Shillong, May 30: The election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat of Meghalaya will be held on June 18. Counting of votes will take place on the same day.
The term of the current MP, WR Kharlukhi, who represents the National People's Party (NPP), ends on June 19. Meghalaya goes to the polls with nine other States for 24 Rajya Sabha seats across the country.
State Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari informed media persons today that polling would be held from 9 am to 4 pm on June 18 for the Upper House seat. The counting of votes will be held at 5 pm.
Tiwari said the notification for the election would be issued on June 1, and the last date for filing nominations is June 8. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on June 9 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 11.
Earlier, Tiwari convened a meeting with representatives of various political parties regarding the upcoming polls. Special emphasis was placed on the provisions relating to the publicity of criminal antecedents by candidates and political parties, in compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court and instructions issued by the Election Commission of India.
Meanwhile, the NPP is likely to retain the seat owing to its comfortable majority in the current Assembly. James Sangma, the elder brother of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, is likely to be nominated for the seat by the party.
