Nagaon Bypoll: Raijor Dal weighs options, Akhil slams Congress

Nagaon Bypoll: Raijor Dal weighs options, Akhil slams Congress

The Assam Tribune 3 months ago

Guwahati, July 3: With the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election on the horizon, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi on Friday said the party is yet to decide whether it will contest the seat or support any other party, adding that a final decision will be taken at the State Executive Committee meeting on Saturday.

"A section of the party is in favour of fielding a Raijor Dal candidate from the constituency, while another section believes we should not contest. We will discuss the matter tomorrow and take a final decision," Gogoi said during a press briefing at Shilpagram, Guwahati.

Referring to Raijor Dal's alliance with the Congress, Gogoi questioned the value of supporting the party, alleging that its elected representatives often switch sides or compromise with the BJP.

"There is no point in helping the Congress. If they win, they either join the BJP or end up compromising with the BJP," he said.

Calling for greater unity among Assam's regional political parties, Gogoi said they must come together under a common platform to effectively challenge the BJP.

"Regional parties in Assam must unite. There is no benefit in remaining divided. Once we come together, we must strategise on how to defeat the BJP," he said.

Asked whether Raijor Dal was reconsidering its alliance with the Congress, Gogoi said the party had not yet deliberated on the issue.

"We are least bothered. Whether we remain in the alliance or leave it, nothing much changes. If an alliance is formed just two days before the Assembly election, what is the meaning of it? We formed an alliance and suffered a heavy defeat, and the Congress is responsible for that. While the BJP was actively campaigning before the election, Congress leaders were in Delhi waiting for tickets," he alleged.

Gogoi further claimed that the Congress lacks the organisational strategy needed to win elections in the current political landscape.

"The Congress does not have the tactics required to fight elections in the modern era. That is its biggest problem," he said.

Earlier, on June 7 the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee held a key meeting of its state leadership in Guwahati to outline its strategy for the road ahead.

Chaired by APCC president Gaurav Gogoi at Rajiv Bhawan, the meeting focused primarily on preparations for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, organisational reforms and the party's broader political agenda.
