Kokrajhar, May 18: A powerful thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall battered several parts of Assam's Kokrajhar district on Sunday evening, uprooting trees, damaging homes and disrupting electricity supply after strong winds affected power infrastructure across large areas.
The storm also caused extensive damage to areca nut plantations and other crops, leaving several houses partially damaged. No casualties have been reported so far.
Among the worst-hit structures was the old Power House building in Kokrajhar, which houses the control room of the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).
Senior APDCL official of Kokrajhar Division, Gopal Sah, confirmed that the severe weather caused major damage to the old Power House building, disrupting electricity services in several areas.
"The old Power House building, which houses the control room of APDCL in Kokrajhar, was severely damaged during the powerful thunderstorm. The tin roof of the building was completely blown away by strong winds, causing extensive damage to the structure," Sah said.

"Due to extremely severe weather conditions, electricity services across several areas have been badly affected. We are working to repair the damage and restore electricity services as soon as possible," he added.
Uprooted trees and broken branches further damaged electric lines and related installations, triggering prolonged power outages in many areas of the district.
Restoration work began soon after the storm, with APDCL teams working round the clock to restore normal electricity supply.
Speaking to the press, local MLA Rupam Roy said personnel from the police, forest department, district administration and local residents jointly carried out rescue and restoration efforts in affected areas.
"They all worked together to clear uprooted trees, restore normalcy and assist affected people across various localities," Roy said.
He added that emergency response teams remained engaged in removing fallen trees, managing traffic disruptions and supporting restoration efforts throughout the night.
Authorities urged residents to remain cautious and avoid contact with fallen electric wires until services are fully restored.
