Vinesh Phogat is set for a much-anticipated return to competitive wrestling in the 57kg category. She will feature at the 2026 Senior Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda from May 10-12.
This time, Vinesh has registered in a higher weight category. She will be competing 4kg above her usual category and 7kg above the division she featured in at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Vinesh, now a MLA in the Haryana Legislative Assembly, had alleged the Wrestling Federation of India of "deliberately" trying to block her comeback.
Meanwhile, the WFI President Sanjay Singh confirmed to The Bridge that Vinesh has already registered herself in the 57kg category.
"We had released a notification that wrestlers can register themselves directly on the website. WFI is not controlling the website manually, how can we block her from registering. Yes there was an issue with the website which has been sorted this morning," WFI President Sanjay Singh said on Tuesday.
"WFI had given ample time to the wrestlers to register themselves and infact as we speak two days are still remaining. There was no need to make so much noise about it. If the website was not working, the WFI office is always accessible. She could have come and submitted her form in person too, a lot of wrestlers have done that," WFI source said.
At the Paris Olympics, Vinesh had created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. She was later disqualified before her 50kg final for being overweight.
Immediately after Paris, a disappointed and heartbroken Vinesh had announced retirement from the sport citing a lack of strength to continue.
But, last year Vinesh took to social media to express her desire to return to wrestling saying 'the fire never truly left' and that she was eyeing a podium at the 2028 LA Olympics.
Vinesh is now a mother and joined Indian National Congress, winning the Julana constituency in October 2024.
