The US$17.5 billion Microsoft AI Investment in India aims to expand cloud, AI, and skilling initiatives as India positions itself as a future AI powerhouse.

Microsoft AI Investment in India is set to reshape the country's technology landscape, with CEO Satya Nadella announcing a US$17.5 billion (INR 1.5 lakh crore) commitment - the company's largest investment in Asia. At a moment when the world is intensely focused on artificial intelligence, Microsoft is signaling that India has the talent, scale, and ambition to become a global AI hotspot in the coming years.

The four-year plan, spanning 2026 to 2029, aims to build advanced cloud and AI infrastructure, expand skilling programs, and strengthen operations nationwide. Nadella shared the announcement during his meeting with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on December 9, 2025, ahead of his India AI tour. This Microsoft AI Investment in India also aligns with the country's broader push to establish itself as a leading hub for AI innovation, further supported by earlier commitments from other major tech companies.

In a

after the meeting, Nadella posted, "Microsoft is committing US$17.5B-our largest investment ever in Asia-to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India's AI-first future." Prime Minister Modi

, hailing the meeting as 'productive' and stating this as an opportunity for the 'youth of India to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet.' Nadella is in India for events in New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai, as part of a three-day tour for Microsoft's AI conferences.

According to Microsoft, the US$17.5 billion investment will build hyperscale and AI infrastructure across India. A key focus is the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad, expected to be set up by mid-2026 with three availability zones. This would make it Microsoft's largest hyperscale region in India. The active data centre regions in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune will also expand, and they intend to offer low-latency services for enterprises, startups, and public sector institutions, according to the company.

Microsoft already employs over 22,000 people across cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram, and Noida. The investment intends to support ongoing operations and initiatives in these cities.

With the Microsoft AI investment in India, the company also intends to integrate enhanced advanced AI capabilities into two platforms under the Ministry of Labour and Employment - e-Shram and the National Career Service. It plans to target AI distribution for 310 million informal workers using these platforms.

The company states that this integration will improve multilingual access, AI job matching, skill and demand analytics, AI résumé creation, and formal employment paths using the Azure OpenAI Service. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw also praised the meeting on X, stating that 'the use of AI for public good, frontier technologies, and data sovereignty' was a key consideration.

Microsoft stated its commitment to developing AI skills for 20 million Indians by 2030 through its 'ADVANTA(I)GE' initiative. This commitment comes after the company's previous goal, announced in January 2025, to empower 10 million Indians with these skills. According to Microsoft, the initiative has already trained 5.6 million people since January 2025, creating jobs for 125,000 people.

Microsoft has also introduced the Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud for Indian customers.

A sovereign public cloud is a public cloud platform where all data, operations, and services remain within India's borders and comply fully with Indian laws. It offers the scale and flexibility of public cloud while meeting strict data-residency and regulatory requirements.

On the other hand, a sovereign private cloud is a dedicated, isolated cloud environment hosted entirely within India, giving organisations complete control over data, governance, and security. It is designed for highly sensitive or regulated workloads that require maximum sovereignty and customisation.

The company announced that Azure Local now offers "hundreds of node scale, external SAN storage integration, and the latest NVIDIA GPUs, enabling high-performance, secure, and compliant environments. In addition, Microsoft 365 Local which runs on Sovereign Private Cloud, powered by Azure Local, is also available to Indian customers."

With Sovereign Public Cloud now available in India, organizations can leverage a prescriptive architecture for deploying workloads in Azure with built-in compliance guardrails using Sovereign Landing Zones, do policy enforcement, and apply governance controls, said Microsoft.

Sovereign Public Cloud is now available from Microsoft's Indian regions, while Sovereign Private Cloud will support both connected and disconnected operations in customers or Microsoft's partner's data centres.

This investment adds to Microsoft's January 2025 US$3 billion investment over two years in India. According to the company, they are on track to invest that amount by the end of 2026. Google also recently announced a plan to invest US$15 billion for an AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, from 2026 to 2030. According to both companies, these investments were announced in line with India's 'Viksit Bharat 2047' goal, which highlights investments in AI infrastructure and services over the coming years.
