An official statement has confirmed that Google's Gemini will power Apple's Siri alongside other features as Apple will use Google's AI technology for its foundation models.
Google's Gemini will power Apple's Siri soon as the companies have announced a multi-year collaboration where Apple's foundation models will use AI technology from Google. This also includes the major upgrade that has been teased for Siri for a while now and will finally be released later this year.
Reports of a Gemini-backed Siri began floating around back in November of last year and the official confirmation that Gemini will power Siri came through a joint statement by the two brands. "Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year," the statement read.
The decision to use Google's models seems to have been made after "careful evaluation" where the company thinks that Google's Al technology "provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users." "Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards."
Apple's Siri has been lagging behind for a while now when it comes to competition with other virtual assistants. While Siri has been using ChatGPT to solve some of the more elaborate queries from users, in our experience, that seems to be more of a workaround rather than a baked-in functionality which can truly leverage AI to solve the user's query. Not only is it slow, but it also lacks many capabilities which Google's Gemini has had for a while now.
With this partnership confirming that Gemini will power Apple's Siri, we expect major improvements across the board. Meanwhile, Apple is further expected expand its product lineup this year as usual. Apple could release the iPhone 17e, along with an entry-level iPad with the A18 chip and an iPad Air with the M4 processor. Then, there also should be an M5 version of the MacBook Air, along with new MacBook Pros with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips
