Speculation about Imtiaz Ali's new film, Main Vaapas Aaunga, is only gaining momentum. Just days following the release of its emotional trailer on social media sites, the movie made a spectacular debut on the international stage via a special screening at Diljit Dosanjh's 2026 AURA Tour Concert held in Toronto.
The screening brought much more than just music, offering moviegoers a sneak preview of one of this year's most eagerly awaited releases.
Toronto Concert Turns Into a Cinematic Moment
Several thousand fans who attended Diljit Dosanjh's concert in Toronto were treated to the screening of the trailer on large stadium screens, one of the highlights of that event. As the visuals rolled, the fans went into raptures, their joy captured on numerous videos which quickly flooded the Internet via social media sites. The outburst was fueled by the excitement about the movie release.
Commenting on the event, one fan wrote: "From the tale of belonging to an arena packed with emotions. #MainVaapasAaunga trailer sets aflame a packed crowd at Diljit Dosanjh concert in Toronto. What a sight. What a start!"
A Love Story Set Against the Partition
Main Vaapas Aaunga is a heart-wrenching love story filled with grief and nostalgia and centered around one of the most tumultuous periods in the history of India - The Partition of 1947. This movie is narrated in a non-linear, back-and-forth style with an old man reminiscing about the past, played by Naseeruddin Shah, as he reveals his memories to another person, played by Diljit Dosanjh.
Through this story, we find ourselves transported back in time and into the lives of a pair of lovers played by Vedang Raina and Sharvari Wagh, who have been changed forever due to Partition.
Imtiaz Ali on Portraying Partition With Honesty
Though it is set in the backdrop of an intensely personal love affair, the director of the movie has ensured that it does not ignore the hard facts of partition.
Talking about his vision for the film, Ali said, "We have never been trying to act as if it did not happen. We have not been saying that this thing that is happening here was at all pleasant in any sense. We completely respect it and remain true to events as they were in 1947."
A Personal Story Amid a Historic Tragedy
According to the director, the core of Main Vaapas Aaunga does not revolve around politics but rather around the human connections that have been disrupted by the events of history. The filmmaker confessed that his movie revolves around two young individuals whose lives were completely shattered by situations that were beyond their control.
"[T]he story of a young boy and a young girl who are aggrieved by the Partition for reasons very close to home. They're not mature enough or magnanimous enough to think that, you know, actually, the partitioning of my country is my problem. [What they're upset about] is that partition that divides us from each other," he concluded.
A Musical Reunion Fans Have Been Waiting For
More reason to look forward to this movie would be the reunion of Imtiaz Ali with music director A. R. Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil. These three have come together before to give Hindi cinema its best music ever, through movies like "Rockstar," "Highway" and "Tamasha."

Vaapas Aaunga is a film that brings together an excellent cast including Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari Wagh and Vedang Raina. With romantic, nostalgic and historic elements all rolled into one, it will be a film experience not to miss once it hits movie theatres on June 12, 2026.
