The Metropolitano crowd turned emotional as Antoine Griezmann wrapped up his final game for Atletico Madrid on Sunday. After Diego Simeone's side edged past Girona in the La Liga game, a farewell tribute was organised for Griezmann, the all-time top scorer in the club's history.
The French World Cup winner has spent the majority of his career at Atletico Madrid. He had briefly joined Barcelona but returned to the Spanish capital after two seasons.
Griezmann gave a heartfelt speech, appreciating the love of the home fans. He was also felicitated by Atletico manager Someone, with legends like Diogo Godin and Fernando Torres gracing the post-match ceremony.

Antoine Griezmann, who started his senior career at Real Sociedad, first joined Atletico Madrid in 2014. After spending five seasons, the French international shifted his base to Barcelona to join a Lionel Messi-led side. He lifted the Copa del Rey title with the Catalan side in 2020-21 before rejoining Atletico.
Griezmann began his farewell speech with an apology to Atletico fans, referring to his Barcelona spell. "This is important. I know many of you have already, and some still haven't, but I apologize again," the 35-year-old said.
"I didn't realize how much love I had here. I was very young, and I made a mistake. I came back to my senses, and we did everything we could to enjoy life here again," he added.

The veteran forward has secured three titles during his long spell with Atletico. He became the Spanish Super Cup (Supercopa de España) champion in his debut season. In 2018, Griezmann won the UEFA Europa League as well as the UEFA Super Cup in a dominant campaign. However, he has never become the La Liga champion.
"I haven't been able to bring home a LaLiga title or a Champions League trophy, but this love is worth more. I'll carry it with me for the rest of my life," he said after playing the final match at Atletico's home. Griezmann has scored 212 goals and provided 100 assists in his 500 appearances for Atletico across all competitions.

With one game remaining in LaLiga 2025-26, Antoine Griezmann has already finalised his next destination. As his Atletico Madrid contract expires this summer, Griezmann will move to MLS club Orlando City. He has signed a two-year contract with the American side.
