Inside Sakib Hussain's Life: From Barefoot Dreams to IPL Debut - Career Stats, Journey, Interesting Facts And More

There is a reason why the Indian Premier League is called the league of dreams. Last night at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, a 21-year-old Sakib Hussain saw his dream unfold in the most beautiful way when the Sunrisers Hyderabad debutant picked up 4 wickets for just 24 runs in his very first IPL appearance against the unbeaten Rajasthan Royals, guiding his team to a 57-run victory and ending their losing streak.

But this wasn't just about numbers on a scoreboard. It was the story behind those numbers that made Sakib Hussain a star of the cricket world within a nightfall.

Sakib Hussain's Performance in IPL Debut - SRH vs RR Match

In the match 21 of IPL 2026 Tuesday, RR won the toss and chose to bowl first. Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 197/5, powered by Heinrich Klaasen's explosive 64 off 28 balls and Travis Head's 48. The chase turned historic when SRH introduced Sakib Hussain as an Impact Player. Sakib dismantled RR with 4/24, including the crucial wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal and a late double-strike to remove Jofra Archer and Ravi Bishnoi. He was supported by fellow debutant Praful Hinge, who took 4/34. Despite a fighting 69 from Donovan Ferreira, the Royals collapsed. SRH won by 57 runs, ending Rajasthan's unbeaten streak.

Who is Sakib Hussain?

Born in Gopalganj, Bihar, on December 14, 2004, he grew up in a modest household where financial struggles were a part of everyday life. His father worked as a daily-wage labourer and farmer, and the family often lived hand-to-mouth. At one point, Sakib even considered joining the Indian Army, training rigorously for it by running for hours daily, hoping to secure a stable future for his family.

Cricket, however, was always his true passion, even if the odds were stacked against him. He began playing tennis-ball cricket in local tournaments, earning small amounts of money to support his household.

Sakib's First Cricket Spikes

One of the facts from his journey going viral on internet since last night is that without proper equipment, he often played with worn-out shoes or even barefoot. Purchasing the professional cricket pairs that would come in 14-15k was unaffordable for the family. Then, Sakib's mother made an incredible sacrifice, selling her jewellery just to buy him a pair of proper spike shoes.

Entering the Cricket World

Realising that his village lacked the infrastructure needed to grow as a cricketer, Sakib moved to Patna, where he struggled but continued to chase his dream. He eventually made his domestic debut for Bihar in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at just 17. Their he claimed his first first-class five-for against Arunachal Pradesh, finishing with figures of 6 for 41 in just 11.3 overs.

He was then picked by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 but didn't get a chance to play. After going unsold in 2025 IPL Auction, things might seemed to end. But, he returned stronger in domestic cricket, delivering impactful performances, including a six-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy, which brought him back into the spotlight. That perseverance paid off when Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him for the 2026 season.

With this bowling figure, Sakib equalled the record for the best bowling figures by an Indian on IPL debut, matching the feat set by Ashwani Kumar in 2025.
