Former Indian captain and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend MS Dhoni could trigger a change in his jersey number ahead of the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
A post from the celebrated keeper-batter's Facebook account stated that he will change his jersey No. from 7 to 8, creating plenty of buzz among the fans whether the jersey has been retired.

Dhoni, who made his international debut in 2004, has been maintaining his jersey No. as 7 seemingly due to his date of birth being July 7, 1981. The Ranchi-born cricketer has donned the jersey No.7 even in IPL, where he has featured for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). Nevertheless, in the latest post on his official Facebook account, Dhoni wrote:
"Some numbers stay with you. 7 has always been one of them. But today, I'm switching to 8. You'll know why soon."

Meanwhile, the former Super Kings skipper is set to be available for all the games of IPL 2026 as franchise owner Kasi Viswanathan reportedly confirmed it amid speculations swirling that he could feature only in a few games. The keeper-batter, who had relinquished his leadership duties and handed it over to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024, had returned to the helm for a few games after the opener had injured his elbow.
But the Super Kings had finished at the bottom of the table for the first time in IPL history, winning only four games out of 14.
