IPL 2026: Is Sanju Samson Replacing Ruturaj Gaikwad as CSK Captain Mid-Season? - Former Cricketer Makes Big Claim

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hierarchy has become the centre of discussions after some very candid remarks by former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Simon Doull about the team’s leadership.

On a recent Cricbuzz show, the pundits reasoned that the current captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, would understandably be in a position where he felt “threatened” by the celebrity-marked arrival of Sanju Samson.

Meanwhile, as Samson is considered a long-term replacement for the great MS Dhoni because of his wicket-keeping skills and leadership experience as captain of the Rajasthan Royals, it is presumed by experts that this move has brought about a rare and possibly destabilising situation in the Chepauk camp for the IPL 2026 season.

Michael Vaughan Questions Gaikwad's Security As Leader

The discussion took a sharp turn when Michael Vaughan publicly expressed his doubt that merely having an experienced leader like Samson around would make Ruturaj constantly look over his shoulder. Vaughan emphasised the paradox of the situation that the management supports Gaikwad as the official captain, yet at the same time signs a player who resembles MS Dhoni, the wicketkeeper-captain.

Vaughan believes that instructing a young leader to “carry on captaining” while a conclusive alternative is being brought in could lead to a “dynamic”, which is indeed difficult to overlook, more so when the franchise has a history of relying on the stability of a keeper-captain.

Vaughan asked Doull: "What about the captain, Gaikwad? Do you think he feels threatened [by Samson]?”

Doull: Absolutely.

Simon Doull Highlights The 'Enormous Pressure' On Sanju Samson

Simon Doull, a former New Zealand seamer, also backed up the view. He pointed out that the pressure isn’t only on Gaikwad but also on Samson, who needs to justify the huge trade that brought him to Chennai. To get the Kerala star, CSK apparently gave up two very good players, and the fans in the South who know him well have definitely set very high expectations for him.

Vaughan: "So that's another kind of dynamic that you're looking at, [One of the league's] youngest captains Gaikwad, he's done it a bit now, and you kind of go, 'Go on, we're gonna back you, you're the captain. But by the way, we're signing Sanju, who's a very good captain, and he's a keeper. And guess what? We've had a keeper who was a captain for a long period of time and did very well, and we're gonna try to replace him. But you carry on captaining and hope it doesn't affect you.'”

Doull: "Tough challenge for him, and it's one of those situations you find yourself in when you're not desperate, but when you want to play for a certain side, and you want to put on a show, I mean, he is a South boy, isn't he? He is a Kerala boy; he wants to put on a show. I think he feels like he's more at home. In the South, the trade happened; it was a big trade, as we've talked about, you've lost 2 high quality players for one player. So the pressure's quite enormous, the pressure of maybe what they see him as in the future as well. But he just got to think back to a few weeks ago, doesn't he? And how was he playing in the last 3 games (in T20 World Cup 2026)?”

Doull has faith that Samson will be able to draw on the confidence from his outstanding performances in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he hit three successive half-centuries to overcome a difficult start to the IPL 2026 with two consecutive single-digit scores. Samson’s bigger goal, however, is to “put on a show” for a fanbase that already regards him as the future mainstay of the team.
