In 1956, the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti was formed to push for the creation of a separate state. Later, in 1959, the government appointed a committee to reorganise states on linguistic lines. Based on its recommendations, Maharashtra was formed by separating it from the former Bombay State and including Marathi-speaking regions, including Bombay (now Mumbai).
