Telugu actor Naga Chaitanya has moved the Delhi High Court against what his legal team described as the "systematic misuse" of his identity across online platforms, including AI-generated videos, deepfake clips, pornographic material and defamatory content circulating on the internet.
On Friday, the High Court issued a summons in the matter while observing that public figures may be subject to public scrutiny, but such exposure "has its limitations."
Justice Jyoti Singh, who heard the matter, also indicated that the court may pass an interim order to protect the actor's personality and publicity rights as the case proceeds further. The next hearing has been scheduled for September 30.
What Is Naga Chaitanya's Petition About?
According to the suit filed before the Delhi High Court, the actor has alleged that multiple unidentified individuals and platforms have been illegally using his name, image, voice and likeness to create misleading and explicit content online. The petition claims that several websites and digital entities have used the actor's identity in pornographic search tags, domain names, metadata and manipulated videos to attract traffic and generate revenue.
Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, appearing for the actor, told the court that some of the content falsely portrayed Naga Chaitanya in objectionable situations using artificial intelligence tools and deepfake technology. The legal team also pointed to videos allegedly depicting the actor alongside his former wife while spreading fabricated narratives about their personal lives and separation. "This is trolling, this is not fair criticism," Gaggar argued during the hearing.
Court Observes Limits To Public Scrutiny
During the proceedings, Justice Jyoti Singh acknowledged that celebrities naturally face greater public attention than ordinary citizens. However, the court stressed that such attention cannot become a license for exploitation or defamation. "You are in public life, you are certainly more vulnerable than the rest of the people, but it has its limitations," the court observed. The judge also reportedly examined some of the allegedly infringing content and described one of the links as "borderline."
Why The Case Matters In The Age Of AI
The lawsuit arrives at a time when AI-generated celebrity content has become a growing concern globally. From manipulated videos and cloned voices to fake endorsements and digitally altered intimate clips, public figures across industries are increasingly seeking legal protection against online misuse. Naga Chaitanya's legal team argued that the actor continues to face fresh violations almost every day, which is why they requested a "dynamic injunction", a legal mechanism allowing quicker removal of future infringing content without repeatedly approaching the court.
The actor's petition alleges violations under personality rights, performer's rights protected by the Copyright Act, and broader constitutional protections tied to dignity, privacy and reputation.
YouTube Responds During Hearing
Counsel appearing for YouTube informed the court that several AI-generated videos flagged by the actor had already been removed from the platform. However, the platform also reportedly argued that some links shared by the plaintiff fell under news reporting and commentary, which would require a different legal standard and assessment. The court did not issue a final ruling on those aspects during Friday's hearing.
A Legal Battle Similar To Nagarjuna's Earlier Case
Interestingly, Naga Chaitanya's father, veteran actor Nagarjuna, had previously approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his own personality rights in a separate matter. Courts in India have increasingly recognised celebrity personality rights over the past few years, especially in cases involving unauthorised commercial usage, fake advertisements, manipulated content and AI-generated impersonations.
Legal experts believe the latest case could become another significant precedent in how Indian courts handle deepfake-related disputes involving public figures.
Naga Chaitanya's Career And Public Profile
Naga Chaitanya remains one of Telugu cinema's most prominent actors, known for films such as Ye Maaya Chesave, Majili, Love Story and Custody. Over the years, he has built a strong fan following across South India and among global Telugu-speaking audiences. The actor has largely maintained a private public image despite intense media attention surrounding both his professional career and personal life.
With AI-generated celebrity manipulation becoming increasingly sophisticated, the outcome of this case could have implications far beyond the Telugu film industry.
