The first season of Spider-Noir was helmed by Harry Bradbeer, Nzingha Stewart, Alethea Jones, and Greg Yaitanes and released to streaming on Prime Video on May 27th.
Among the cast members of the series are Nicolas Cage, Lamorne Morris, Jack Huston, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, and Brendan Gleeson. The show is considerably more muted and gloomy than many other contemporary comic book adaptations that depict superheroes.
Unlike such shows that focus on action and spectacle, Spider-Noir centers on silence, suffering, and exhaustion. This superhero tale takes place in a desolate, corrupt version of Depression-era New York City.
A Story Rooted in Loss and Redemption
The show revolves around Ben Reilly, played by Nicolas Cage, who is a failing private investigator tormented by tragedy and the death of his spouse. Formerly referred to as Spider, a masked superhero, Ben has been making a living by barely scraping through and living with the shadow of his own past hanging over him.
Things become even more complicated for Ben when Adison sets fire to the house of the feared mobster Silvermane, played by Brendan Gleeson. The show, which initially starts off as a detective drama slowly unfolds into something much bigger involving criminal underworld, journalism and superhumans.
Joining the cast are Robbie Robertson, an ambitious and intelligent journalist portrayed by Lamorne Morris, and Cat Hardy, a dark nightclub singer played by Li Jun Li. As the season progresses, there will be more twists in the story as it delves deeper into the supernatural element with stories about the origin of these superhumans.
However, in all that darkness, lies a very personal journey about guilt, loneliness and seeking redemption in a corrupt society.
Atmosphere Becomes the Series' Greatest Strength
Among other strengths of the TV show is the attention to the mood and visual identity. The monochrome color palette is not just a stylized device; on the contrary, it adds to the oppressive atmosphere created by the storyline. Smoking jazz bars, darkened apartments, and rainy streets create an atmosphere of despair, matching the mood of its inhabitants perfectly.
While at times the show gets carried away by its grimness, especially in the middle episodes when there is too much talking going on and too little action, its emotional depth helps the viewer overlook these drawbacks.
Contrary to popular trends in superhero movies which are focused on scale and crossovers, Spider-Noir goes for intimate rather than grandiose settings. It has much in common with traditional crime serials rather than contemporary Marvel adaptations.

Strong Performances Hold the Story Together
Nicolas Cage is certainly a brilliant casting choice for Ben Reilly, because he completely embraces the aspect of his exhaustion, vulnerability, and emotional scars. The actor is responsible for giving many emotional beats in the series.
The casting of Lamorne Morris in the role of Robbie Robertson allows him to show that side of humanity in his character, while Li Jun Li perfectly portrays the mysteriousness and unpredictability of Cat Hardy. Lastly, Brendan Gleeson does a great job at portraying Silvermane by keeping his performance believable yet still menacing.
An Imperfect but Distinctive Superhero Drama
However, there are some drawbacks to the story line; some chapters are too drawn out, and there are instances when the mystery is lost before it picks up in the final chapters of the book. Yet, it would be unfair not to give credit to this graphic novel for making the attempt at creating something so different from ordinary comic book superheroes.
The world of Spider-Noir consists of broken people living through hard times, and this makes it stand out. At the end of the day, the readers will take away from the story a sense of imperfection, but one that feels vibrant and alive.
