Puducherry: Following a decisive victory by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2026 Assembly Elections, N Rangaswamy has been officially sworn in as the Chief Minister of Puducherry.

Rangaswamy has now become the union territory's CM for a historic fifth term.

Puducherry Assembly Election 2026 Results

In the 2026 Puducherry assembly elections, the All India NR Congress (AINRC) swept by winning 12 seats out of 30. Its alliance partners, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), won 4 and 1 seats respectively. It was an impressive showing for the NDA.

Aftermath of the 2026 Puducherry Assembly Elections

After the elections, the All India NR Congress (AINRC) had an internal party meet where N Rangaswamy was unanimously chosen as the CM pick. Independent candidates Jose Charles Martin (MLA from Kamaraj Nagar Assembly Seat) and V. Vigneswaran (MLA from the reserved Negungadu assembly seat) also pledged their support to the NDA.

Then, with 18 candidates, the coalition approached Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan and staked their claim to form the government.

Puducherry Oath Ceremony: Key Highlights

The oath ceremony happened on 13th May, 2026, at Lok Bhawan from 10 AM IST. Rangaswamy, who will now serve as chief minister for the fifth time, was sworn in by Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan. Prominent guests at the ceremony included BJP national president Nitin Nabin, BJP election in-charge Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, State BJP President VP Ramalingam

After taking the oath, Rangaswamy promised to build Puducherry like Singapore. "We are in the service of the people. All the schemes will continue, and we are also introducing new schemes. We will develop Puducherry very well. If more ministers will take the oath in the coming days will be discussed with our leaders," he said.

The New Cabinet: 2 MLAs Sworn In

Along with Rangaswamy, 2 other MLAs were sworn in:

  • A Namassivayam from the BJP.

  • Malladi Krishna Rao from the AINRC.
