Ujjaini Express Derailment: What Exactly Happened?
The derailment happened during routine maintenance work near Khand village. Initial reports suggest a possible brake failure caused the accident. Railway authorities and GRP teams quickly reached the spot and cleared the area. An official inquiry has now started to find the exact reason behind the derailment. Train operations in the area were monitored closely after the incident.

Increasing Cases of Derailment Spark Safety Concerns
Train derailments account for nearly 70% of all train accidents in India, serving as a critical safety concern despite a long-term decline in overall consequential accidents. While Ministry of Railways statistics indicate that total annual consequential accidents dropped sharply from an average of 171 per year (2004-2014) to under 35 in recent cycles, highly visible mid-section and turnout derailments continue to fuel public and political anxiety regarding infrastructure integrity and passenger safety.
Government Modernisation & Mitigation Strategies
To address these vulnerabilities, Indian Railways has shifted its primary infrastructure focus onto targeted structural interventions:
·The Kavach Safety Rollout: Rapid installation of the indigenous Kavach System (Automatic Train Protection) across high-density networks to automatically apply brakes and prevent human error or signal-jumping crashes.
·Electronic Interlocking Upgrade: Traditional mechanical signalling has been systematically replaced with electrical/electronic interlocking systems across more than 6,660 railway stations to verify line occupancy instantly.
·Massive Safety Outlays: The national carrier's dedicated safety-related expenditure allocation scales up continuously, planning over ₹1.20 lakh crore in targeted funding to bolster infrastructure durability.
