US Stock Market Holiday: Here's What Investors Need to Know on Memorial Day as Wall Street Hits Pause

The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed on Monday because Memorial Day brings the entire US stock market a stop. There will be no equity trading.

The market is scheduled to be open at 9:30 a.m. EST on Tuesday, May 26th. The US bond market will also be closed on Memorial Day. The early close on the last trading session now means the entire fixed-income market will be shut its doors on all trades.

What the Market Closure Means for Investors

Investors will not be able to buy and sell stocks or bonds on any US exchange, as liquidity in domestic markets is also halted. Some futures trading may still be in operation, though on a limited holiday schedule.

Why Is Wall Street Shut Down Today?

Memorial Day is a US federal holiday that falls on the last Monday of May. The holiday honours military members who died serving their nation. It dates back to the 1860s, and was widely observed during the post-Civil War era as "Decoration Day."It was made an official US federal holiday in 1971.

Banks and Financial Services Also Affected

Your banks, such as JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and others are closed for branch operations today, but their ATMs and online banking systems are all up. In-person services are suspended for the day.

USPS is closed for Memorial Day and all domestic mail is on hold. You can also expect UPS and FedEx to have reduced or modified schedules. Some facilities might be closed completely.

Retail and Grocery Stores Open

While the financial markets are mostly closed today, most retail chains including Walmart, Target, Home Depot and Best Buy are open. Grocery stores like Kroger, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and ALDI are all open with the exception of a few that may have delayed or adjusted business hours.

Most restaurants and fast-food chains including McDonald's, Starbucks, Chipotle, Burger King, and Wendy's remain open to serve customers during the holiday period.

While US markets are closed, international markets across Asia and Europe continue normal trading activity. This keeps global financial momentum active despite the Wall Street pause.

US financial markets will resume normal trading on Tuesday, May 26. Investors are expected to return to regular activity as Wall Street reopens after the Memorial Day holiday break.
