Indian-origin urologist Jitesh Patel has come under public attention in the United States after agreeing to pay $14 million (₹130.12 crore) to resolve allegations of healthcare fraud.
Federal authorities accused Patel and his medical practice of carrying out medically unnecessary procedures and billing government healthcare programs for services that were not required.
The settlement, announced by the United States Department of Justice, resolves claims made under the False Claims Act and the Georgia False Medicaid Claims Act. Officials stated that the agreement settles allegations only and does not confirm legal liability.
Who is Dr. Jitesh Patel?
Jitesh Patel is a US-based urologist of Indian origin associated with Advanced Urology Inc., a healthcare provider specialising in urology services. His practice reportedly operated several affiliated clinics and diagnostic facilities across the state of Georgia.
Patel built his reputation in the field of urology and served patients requiring specialised medical treatments related to urinary tract and reproductive health. Over time, his practice expanded and became a major provider of urology-related procedures, including diagnostic tests and device-based treatments.
However, federal investigators later began reviewing the operations of his medical facilities after receiving complaints from insiders.
Dr. Jitesh Patel: What Allegations Were Made Against Him?
Authorities launched the investigation after two whistleblowers, one former employee and one former physician, filed complaints against Patel's organisation. They alleged that the system was "designed to maximise revenue for Dr Patel and others by performing medically unnecessary procedures and tests."
Investigators claimed that the practice implanted medical devices in certain patients without fully evaluating whether the treatments were necessary. They also alleged that the clinics ordered thousands of ultrasound tests without medical need.
Officials further stated that some patients underwent unnecessary diagnostic procedures that required anaesthesia. In several cases, authorities alleged that billing records included procedures that were never actually performed.
Dr. Jitesh Patel: Whistleblowers to Receive Settlement Share
The investigation involved multiple US agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the US Attorney's Office.
US Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg highlighted the seriousness of such cases.
"Physicians commit fraud when they seek payment for medically unnecessary procedures or bill for services they never performed," he said, adding that misuse of government funds and patient abuse would not be tolerated.
Under the False Claims Act, whistleblowers who help expose fraud can receive a portion of recovered funds. In this case, the individuals who reported the alleged misconduct will receive a combined $2.94 million from the settlement amount.
Dr. Jitesh Patel: Settlement Resolves Allegations, Not Liability
Officials clarified that the settlement addresses allegations raised during the investigation but does not confirm guilt or liability. Such agreements are often used to resolve complex cases without prolonged legal battles.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to its large financial settlement and its impact on public healthcare programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of monitoring medical practices to ensure patient safety and responsible use of taxpayer-funded healthcare systems.
