Indian weightlifter Lovepreet Singh produced a brilliant performance to win the silver medal in the men's +110kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.
The 28-year-old finished with a combined lift of 388kg, missing out on the gold medal by the narrowest of margins. Lovepreet dominated the competition early, successfully lifting 168kg, 173kg and a Commonwealth Games record 176kg in the snatch, giving him a commanding 10kg lead over New Zealand's David Andrew Liti heading into the clean and jerk.
Lovepreet maintained his momentum with successful clean and jerk lifts of 205kg and 212kg, but his bid to lift 217kg on the final attempt fell short. That opened the door for Liti, who delivered a stunning 223kg clean and jerk, setting another Commonwealth Games record and finishing with a winning total of 389kg to snatch the gold by just one kilogram. Lovepreet settled for silver, improving on the bronze medal he won at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, while also adding another medal to India's weightlifting campaign in Glasgow.
Who Is Lovepreet Singh? Inside The Childhood And Early Life Of India's Commonwealth Games Weightlifting Star
Lovepreet Singh is one of India's leading weightlifters, representing Punjab on the international stage. He first came into the spotlight after winning the bronze medal in the men's 109kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham before adding a silver medal in the men's +110kg event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Born on September 6, 1997, in Bal Sachandar village near Amritsar, Lovepreet grew up in a family that struggled financially. From a young age, he contributed to the household by working in agricultural fields, selling vegetables alongside his grandfather and helping manage the family's mare, which was rented out for wedding processions.
Despite the family's hardships, Lovepreet's father, a tailor by profession, encouraged him to pursue sports instead of following the family trade. Lovepreet discovered weightlifting at the age of 13 after watching local youngsters train in his village, an experience that sparked his passion for the sport. With determination and limited resources, he trained under local coaches and steadily progressed through the domestic circuit. His performances for Punjab eventually earned him a place at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Camp at NS NIS Patiala in 2017, marking the beginning of his rise in Indian weightlifting.
