Renowned Japanese anime director Tsutomu Shibayama has died at the age of 84. He passed away on March 6, 2026, after battling lung cancer, his studio Ajiado confirmed.
The announcement was made on March 17 following a private funeral attended by close family. A memorial service will be held later, with details yet to be announced.
Tsutomu Shibayama: Known for the Doraemon Film Series
Shibayama was best known for directing the Doraemon film series for over two decades. He also worked as the chief director of the TV version of the popular anime. His last Doraemon film as director was Doraemon the Movie: Nobita in the Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey, released in 2004.
Long Career in Anime
Born on March 9, 1941, Shibayama co-founded Ajiado in 1978 and later served as its president and CEO. Apart from Doraemon, he directed well-known shows like Chibi Maruko-chan and Nintama Rantaro. He also directed the original 1989 version of Ranma 1/2. In 2018, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival.
