Sunrisers Hyderabad completely mauled Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 6 of the Indian Premier League 2026 on Thursday night at Eden Gardens.
Abhishek Sharma was on fire, smashing 48 off just 21 balls and narrowly missing out on his half-century. But despite the stunning knock, bad news followed as the Board of Control for Cricket in India fined him 25% of his match fee and handed him one demerit point for committing a Level 1 offence under Article 2.3. Here's what exactly happened during the match that led to the SRH star being penalised.
When Varun Chakravarthy took Sharma's catch at deep square leg to dismiss him just before his fifty, the decision was sent upstairs for a third-umpire review. Once the decision was confirmed out, Sharma looked visibly frustrated. In that moment, he was heard using abusive language towards the decision, which was picked up by the officials and led to disciplinary action.
In its official release, the IPL stated, "Abhishek Sharma, All-rounder, Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday. He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 and accepted the Match Referee's sanction."
Sharma admitted the offence and accepted the fine. While this isn't a major setback right now, repeated offences could land him in bigger trouble. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a 36-month period, it can lead to suspension, with bans ranging from one match to up to five matches depending on the severity.
On the other hand, the match itself was a proper one-sided affair. SRH came out all guns blazing after being put in to bat, with Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head tearing into the KKR bowlers and putting on 82 runs in just 5.4 overs. Head smashed 46 off 21 balls while Sharma's 48 off 21 set the tone early. Adding cherry on top, Heinrich Klaasen anchored the innings with a 52 off 35 balls, while Nitish Kumar Reddy added a quick 39 off 24 to push SRH to a massive 226/8, the highest total of IPL 2026 so far.
In response, KKR's chase never really got going. Early wickets, mounting pressure and a couple of costly run-outs completely derailed their innings. Angkrish Raghuvanshi tried to fight back with a 52 off 29 balls, while Rinku Singh chipped in with 35, but the required rate was always out of reach. Finn Allen did provide a brief scare with a blistering 28 off just 7 balls, but it wasn't enough to shift momentum.
Eventually, KKR were bowled out for 161 in just 16 overs, handing SRH a crushing 65-run win and marking the first successful defence of a total in IPL 2026.
