Hollywood icon Sharon Stone talked about one of the saddest parts of her life in The Person Who Believed In Me podcast. She got really sick, and it ended up showing her that her marriage to journalist Phil Bronstein wasn’t working.
Doctors found some breast tumors that might be cancerous, which scared her a lot. Though Sharon thought the tumors weren’t cancer, the doctors insisted she take the threat seriously. In a tough spot, she went through with a double mastectomy. This whole ordeal showed big problems in their relationship, leading her to realize her marriage was falling apart.
The Health Scare That Changed Everything
Stone recalled being told by doctors that the condition was severe and required immediate attention. She said, "I had breast tumours. One of them was bigger than the size of my entire left breast. The doctor had come out to my house and said, 'Look, we think you should have a bilateral mastectomy. This is really bad.’ And we usually when they’re all the way up, we know we go in that they’re cancer. I said, 'I don’t have cancer.’ And he said, 'You don’t get to decide that.’ And I said, 'I do. I do get to decide that. I’m deciding, but I am deciding that I will have a bilateral because I’m not f*ing around. And my husband said, 'Wow, this is ridiculous.’ And got up and left the room." Despite believing she did not have cancer, Stone chose to move forward with the procedure rather than take any chances with her health.
Feeling Alone During a Difficult Decision
Stone says her doctor backed her up and stressed being proactive with health risks like cancer. She felt her ultimate say in her treatments was crucial too. But what really hit hard was the absence of support from her husband through all this. Looking back, Stone notes that period showed a big shift in their relationship dynamics.
“That Was the End of the Marriage”
Reflecting on her husband’s reaction, Stone admitted that she immediately sensed their marriage was beyond repair. She recalled feeling, "That was the end of the marriage. That was it. He was done with me then. It was over. It was just over in the room." The actress explained that she felt her husband viewed her choices as unnecessary and believed she was making too many decisions independently. Those differences, she suggested, ultimately contributed to the breakdown of their relationship.

So, it’s pretty clear that this experience had a huge impact on her life in ways beyond just the physical stuff.
