Train passengers across the UK faced delays on Tuesday afternoon after a technical issue affected the rail network.
Just after 1 pm, National Rail warned that a problem with communication systems in several areas was causing disruption.
The issue affected the system that allows train drivers to stay in contact with rail staff managing the tracks.
Although trains were still running, many had to travel more slowly for safety reasons, leading to longer journey times and delays on several routes.
Many Train Services Affected
Passengers travelling on the Elizabeth line, London Overground, Great Western Railway, and several other services were affected. Other train operators facing delays included Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, LNER, Northern, South Western Railway, and TransPennine Express.
Network Rail teams worked to fix the problem, and just before 2 pm, National Rail said the issue had been resolved. However, delays were expected to continue until around 3 pm while services slowly returned to normal.
The disruption caused inconvenience for many passengers during a busy afternoon of travel.
Passengers were advised to check live travel updates before starting their journeys and allow extra travel time where possible.
The incident also highlights how dependent modern rail services are on technology and communication systems to keep trains running safely and on time.
