He said his government had sent a report to the offices of the Prime Minister and the Union home minister about those missing.

"Thirty-three people (from Bengal) went missing in the Nepal disaster, and so far one of them has been contacted," Suvendu said. "Still, 32 are missing. We are in touch with the Kathmandu police. Our control rooms functioned through the night."

Suvendu said that most of those missing had travelled through a tourism agency in Calcutta and that the police had contacted their families. Many of the families confirmed this.

"We want all the remaining 32 persons from our state to return safely," Suvendu said.

After learning about the Nepal floods, Suvendu said, he had instructed chief secretary Manoj Agarwal to open a control room at the state secretariat, Nabanna. The state police, too, opened a control room at their headquarters in Bhabani Bhavan.

Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee, too, hoped for the safe return of the missing.

"The scale of destruction to homes, infrastructure and communities is deeply distressing," she posted on Xon Thursday.

"At this hour of profound loss, I stand in solidarity with the people of Nepal and commend everyone engaged in the ongoing rescue and relief efforts."
