Maruti Suzuki India has launched the new Baleno premium hatchback in India, introducing a refreshed design, new safety technologies and upgraded cabin features as the company seeks to strengthen the model's position in the premium hatchback segment.

Bookings for the new Baleno are now open for ₹11,000, while prices start at ₹6.10 lakh (ex-showroom). The company is positioning the latest iteration of the Baleno around its 'Dare to go Glam' design philosophy, aimed primarily at young urban customers.

The most significant addition to the new Baleno is a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), combining radar and camera technology. The system offers features such as Advanced Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, High Beam Assist, Vehicle Sway Warning and Forward Collision Warning.

The hatchback also comes equipped with six airbags, Electronic Stability Program, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Emergency Stop Signal, Hill Hold Control, reverse parking sensors, three-point seat belts and seat-belt reminders. A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System has also been added to the safety package.

"The Baleno has been a definitive pillar for NEXA and the premium hatchback segment over the course of a decade," said Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer, marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki India. He said the latest model aims to raise customer expectations with segment-first features such as Level 2 ADAS while giving the hatchback a new visual identity.

The new Baleno gets a redesigned front fascia featuring a wider interpretation of the NEXWave grille. The grille uses prominent 3D patterns and horizontal chrome slats, while a fresh front bumper and redesigned lower grille add to the revised styling. A new chrome-accented fender garnish, LED daytime running lights and shark-fin antenna further distinguish the model.

The hatchback will be available in seven colour options, including the new Enigmatic Teal shade.

Inside, the Baleno receives a dual-tone cabin with piano-black inserts and leatherette upholstery. Ventilated front seats are among the key additions, while other new features include a new Clarion sound system and a Qi-certified wireless smartphone charger with a cooling function.

The model retains features such as a 360-degree camera and head-up display. It also gets a 22.86cm (9-inch) SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Suzuki Connect telematics provides more than 40 connected-car functions covering vehicle safety and security, driving behaviour, alerts and remote operations.

The new Baleno is powered by Maruti Suzuki's Z12E petrol engine, which produces about 83ps (61kW) of maximum power and 112.4Nm of peak torque. The engine features idle start-stop technology and dual variable valve timing.

Transmission choices include a five-speed manual and Auto Gear Shift (AGS) automatic. The manual version returns a claimed 23.80kmpl, while the AGS variant delivers 24.77kmpl. The company said these figures represent improvements of 6.4 per cent and 7.9 per cent, respectively, over the previous model.

The Baleno S-CNG is also offered with the Z12E engine and a five-speed manual gearbox. It has a claimed fuel efficiency of 33.61km per kg, representing a 9.8 per cent improvement over its predecessor.

"Every third vehicle in the premium hatchback segment that is being sold today happens to be the Baleno. It has got a very high brand consideration, and in the last five months of this financial year, we have sold close to 83,177 units, at over 16,500 units per month," said Banerjee.
He added that the company has fully utilised the production capacity of Baleno and Fronx at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat.

Asserting that the premium hatchbacks are here to stay, he said: "If the PV (passenger vehicle) industry reaches 6.3 million units in FY31 and even if SUVs are 60-65 per cent of the total market, there is a huge market for the premium hatchback in the remaining 35 per cent".

Meanwhile, for the new Baleno, customers can further customise the car through two accessory collections. The Elegrande Collection focuses on understated exterior enhancements, while the Novo-Spirit Collection offers styling elements aimed at a more contemporary and distinctive appearance.

With the new Baleno, Maruti Suzuki is seeking to combine enhanced safety technology, improved efficiency and premium features in one of its established models in the Indian hatchback market.
