The state government has approved a project for the construction of a bypass between Baijnath and Paprola, aimed at decongesting traffic in the busy markets of both towns in Kangra district.
The project is estimated to cost around Rs 28 crore and expected to bring considerable relief to daily commuters, shopkeepers and local residents. MLA Kishori Lal, while addressing mediapersons at Baijnath, said that the Public Works Department (PWD) had initiated the land acquisition process, marking the first crucial step towards the execution of the project. Sources in the PWD stated that a detailed alignment plan and a technical road map had been finalised, ensuring that the project could move forward without delay.
The proposed bypass will span around 9 km and is strategically designed to divert through-traffic away from the densely populated Baijnath-Paprola stretch of the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway. At present, this road stretch experiences frequent traffic snarls, particularly during peak hours, due to the convergence of local, commercial and long-distance vehicles in the markets. Narrow roads, roadside parking and increasing vehicular volume have further compounded the problem over the years.
As per the proposed alignment, the bypass will originate near the Tashi Jong area, around 2 km before Paprola, and pass through hilly terrain before merging back with the main highway beyond the congested zone. The project also includes the construction of two bridges to ensure seamless connectivity and overcome geographical challenges posed by the terrain.
Local representatives and residents have widely welcomed the approval, describing it as a long-pending demand that has finally materialised. They believe that the bypass will not only ease traffic congestion but also significantly improve road safety by reducing the risk of accidents in crowded market areas. Besides, smoother traffic flow is expected to benefit trade and tourism, providing a boost to the local economy.
PWD officials stated that as administrative approval had been obtained and a budget had been allocated, the groundwork had begun in earnest. They added that efforts were being made to expedite the land acquisition process and complete the project within the stipulated timeframe, ensuring minimal inconvenience to the public during construction.
