In a landmark move for environmental conservation and animal welfare, Faridabad has become home to India's first 'green crematorium' specifically designed for pets.
Situated in Budhena village, this facility marks a shift from traditional disposal methods, offering a dignified and sustainable way for pet owners to bid farewell to their companions.
Launched on National Pet Day, the centre has already performed 42 cremations, demonstrating growing acceptance of eco-friendly practices among residents. The initiative, spearheaded by NGO 'Aapsee' with technical guidance from environmentalist Dr Ramji Jaimal, utilises an advanced eco-friendly furnace that drastically reduces the carbon footprint associated with animal cremation.
Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF) Commissioner Dhirender Khadgata said the facility addresses the necessity of such infrastructure in a rapidly urbanising landscape.
"The establishment of this green crematorium is a critical step in addressing a long-standing gap in urban animal management," Khadgata said. "By moving away from traditional open-air pyres, we are providing an environmentally friendly and dignified way to bid goodbye to pets. This facility not only minimises air pollution and timber consumption but also ensures that the final rites are conducted in a manner that respects both the animal and the public health."
The technological efficiency of the centre is a major highlight. While traditional methods require up to 400 kg of wood, this modern furnace uses only 60 to 80 kg for the initial cycle, dropping to a mere 30 kg once it reaches its optimal temperature of 800°C.
Highlighting the city's broader growth, Faridabad MLA and State Minister Vipul Goel remarked on the city's transformation.
"Faridabad is leading the NCR in many progressive infrastructure developments, from high-tech industrial hubs to unique social projects like this green crematorium," Goel said. "We are committed to making Faridabad a model city where modernisation goes hand in hand with environmental responsibility."
This project is part of a larger movement led by Aapsee, which has established more than 760 green crematoriums for humans across the region. By integrating this technology into the veterinary sector, Faridabad is effectively tackling the challenges of waste management and sanitation while offering emotional closure to grieving pet owners in a sustainable way.
