In a significant move to integrate traditional medicine into mainstream health insurance, the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the General Insurance Council to broaden insurance coverage for Ayush treatments.
The Ministry of Ayush, during its two-day Chintan Shivir which concluded on Friday, also released the benchmark rates for Ayush insurance and launched a toll-free support number, 1800-11-0008, to assist beneficiaries.
Under the new agreement, AIIA has been empanelled with all 32 general insurance companies represented by the Council. This enables eligible patients to access cashless Ayurveda treatment services at authorised facilities.
In 2024, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) issued guidelines mandating that health insurers provide AYUSH treatment coverage on par with conventional medical care, including the enrolment of AYUSH hospitals and day-care centres into insurance networks.
AIIA, a premier institute under the Ministry of Ayush, is dedicated to advancing research, education, and clinical services in Ayurveda.
At the Chintan Shivir, the Ministry also engaged with the Ministry of Health to explore further integration of Ayush services into mainstream healthcare. The Ministry aims to strengthen the sector through a collaborative, evidence-based, and action-oriented approach.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, told The Tribune, "At the chintan shivir we held discussions with NITI Aayog and the Health Ministry on integrating Ayush treatments with allopathy. Our goal is to build trust at the global level."
Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, noted that the Chintan Shivir served as a platform for collective introspection, policy review, and the development of a future roadmap. He highlighted that the discussions reflected a clear consensus on strengthening research, standardisation, and global credibility, while also emphasising the importance of effective communication and public outreach, particularly through digital platforms.
Additionally, the Ministry has launched a WhatsApp channel to further support public engagement and access to Ayush services.
