Students escape unhurt in Sirmaur school scare

A major accident was narrowly averted after a portion of plaster from the ceiling of a classroom at Government Primary School, Jasvi, in the Shillai Assembly segment of Sirmaur district collapsed while classes were in progress on Monday.
The falling debris landed close to the students, who escaped unhurt but were left shaken by the incident.

Taking serious note, Deputy Director of Primary Education, Sirmaur, Rajiv Thakur directed the Block Primary Education Officer, Ronhat, to conduct an immediate inspection of the school premises. Authorities have instructed the school staff to shift students to safer rooms and arrange alternate teaching spaces until the damaged classroom is repaired.

Thakur assured that adequate funds would be made available to carry out necessary repairs and prevent any such incidents in the future.

However, the episode has sparked sharp criticism. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad activist Manish Birsanta termed the incident a result of "gross negligence" by the local administration and public representatives. He said timely repairs could have averted the danger and accused authorities of compromising student safety.

The ABVP has demanded an urgent structural audit of all school buildings in the region and immediate repairs of unsafe infrastructure. Warning of agitation, Birsanta said the organisation would mobilise public support if corrective steps are not taken promptly.
