The iconic Dogra Hall at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT) resonated with admiration and enthusiasm as renowned astronaut Sunita L Williams, NASA astronaut (retd) and US Navy Captain (retd), visited the campus on Tuesday.

Williams delivered an inspiring talk titled, "The Making of an Astronaut: Sunita Williams’ Story", taking the IIT Delhi community on a vivid journey through her experiences in space.

Recounting moments from her recent space mission during Expeditions 71/72, Williams brought the vastness of space closer to the audience, making complex aspects of space travel relatable and engaging. The event marked a moment of pride for the Institute, as students, faculty, researchers and senior leadership gathered to hear from one of the world's most accomplished astronauts.

During her visit, Williams also met Prof Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, along with the Institute's senior leadership. Prof Banerjee highlighted IIT Delhi's growing contributions to space technology and its ongoing collaborations with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Reflecting on the evolving landscape of space exploration, Williams remarked, "It is a very exciting time in human space exploration. Every new project has its ups and downs, but each one teaches us something and prepares us better for what comes next."

Emphasising the importance of problem solving in space missions, she noted, "We often work with multiple systems and redundancies, but sometimes the solution is not very complicated; it can be something simple if you are willing to observe carefully."

Inviting the audience to imagine life without gravity, she explained, "When you take gravity away, you start to understand the nuances of how materials, medicine and even human behaviour change. That understanding helps us learn more about ourselves and the universe."

The lecture was followed by a fireside chat moderated by Prof Shilpi Sharma, Associate Dean, Academic Outreach & New Initiatives. Drawing on questions from across the IIT Delhi community, the discussion explored Williams' personal journey, including her childhood, life as a disciplined student-athlete and swimmer, teamwork, and coping with long-duration space missions. Reflecting on teamwork, Williams said, "When you work as a team towards a common objective, you stop thinking only about individual success and start thinking about how the entire team can be better."

Sharing a lighter yet memorable moment from space, she recalled, "Opening a package full of Indian food in space was incredible. What made it special was sharing it with my crewmates. Food has a way of bringing people together, even in orbit."

Speaking about the broader perspective gained from space, she concluded, "Looking at the earth from above gives you the 'overview effect'. You realise we are all living on one planet, deeply connected, and boundaries start to feel meaningless."

The visit left a lasting impression on the IIT Delhi community, inspiring students and researchers alike to look beyond boundaries and aspire for new frontiers in science and exploration.
