New Delhi: The total headcount of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has gone down from 6,07,979 in FY25 to 5,84,519 in FY26, which indicates a decrease of 23,000 employees, reported Deccan Herald . TCS had last year reported layoffs of around 12,260 employees.

According to analysts, the aggregate net hiring at the industry level has been weak since FY22, primarily because of the prolonged moderation in demand outlook.

“In Q4, we continued to invest in a future-ready workforce with strong additions across experienced talent and campus hires. Building an AI-first culture and equipping our people with AI-ready skills remained a key priority in FY26 and will continue into FY27, as we align closely with our customers' evolving needs,” said Sudeep Kunnumal, chief HR officer, TCS, reported Deccan Herald.

On September 30, 2025, the company's headcount had fallen to 5,93,314 from 6,13,069 at the end of June last year; a net reduction of 19,755 employees.

In July last year, TCS, the country's largest IT services exporter had said it would cut about 2% of its workforce, or around 12,000 employees, as part of a phased restructuring. The actual fall had suggested a sharper-than-expected correction.

The reduction in the number of employees comes amid slowing global IT spending, tighter client budgets, and a pivot towards generative AI and automation.
