For the past several days, the political atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh has been heated regarding the Magh Mela. The state administration is accused of mistreating Swami Avimukteshwaranand and his disciples.
Meanwhile, a major controversy has also erupted over the new University Grants Commission (UGC) rules related to failure in higher education coaching. In this matter, upper-caste students are being portrayed as villains. On Monday, both these issues took a new turn. Notably, Alankar Agnihotri resigned from the post of City Magistrate.

Alankar Agnihotri wrote in his resignation letter that during the Mauni Amavasya bath at the Magh Mela in Prayagraj, the local police administration assaulted Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand of Jyotish Peeth Jyotirmath and his disciples and Brahmin students. The elderly acharyas were beaten, and a Brahmin student was thrown to the ground, dragged by his sacred tuft of hair (shikha), and beaten, thus violating his dignity. The letter states that the tuft of hair is a religious and cultural symbol for Brahmins and ascetics, and that he (Alankar Agnihotri) himself belongs to the Brahmin caste.
The letter further states that the incident clearly shows that the local administration insulted Brahmins. Alankar Agnihotri also said that the incident in Prayagraj is a matter of grave concern, and such incidents occurring under this government shake the soul of an ordinary Brahmin. This incident suggests that the local administration and the current state government are working with an anti-Brahmin ideology and are playing with the dignity of ascetics and holy men. He also expressed his opposition to the UGC law.
