768 drunk drivers caught in weekend crackdown

Hyderabad: Continuing its weekend crackdown on drunk driving, the traffic police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad booked a total of 768 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

While the Hyderabad Commissionerate registered 475 cases, the Cyberabad Commissionerate booked 293 offenders. Four persons were sentenced to imprisonment by courts.

Traffic police intensified enforcement across the city, particularly in the IT corridor under the Cyberabad Commissionerate, conducting large-scale breathalyser checks over the weekend.

In Hyderabad Commissionerate limits, police caught 475 offenders between May 29 and 30. Of these, 397 were two-wheeler riders, 36 were three-wheeler drivers and 42 were drivers of four-wheelers and other vehicles.

According to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels ranged from 30-50 mg/100 ml in 90 cases, 51-100 mg/100 ml in 202 cases, 101-150 mg/100 ml in 96 cases, 151-200 mg/100 ml in 43 cases, 201-250 mg/100 ml in 24 cases, 251-300 mg/100 ml in 11 cases and above 300 mg/100 ml in nine cases.

In Cyberabad, police booked 293 motorists during a special drive conducted over the weekend. Among them were 241 two-wheeler riders, 11 three-wheeler drivers and 41 drivers of four-wheelers and other vehicles. Of the offenders, 244 rec rded BAC levels between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml, 26 had BAC levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, while 23 registered BAC levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml. All offenders will be produced before the court. Police also stated that during the last week (May 25 to 30), courts disposed of 173 drunk-driving cases. While 164 offenders were fined, five were ordered to perform social service in addition to paying fines and four were sentenced to imprisonment.The police warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol, stating that anyone causing a fatal accident while intoxicated would be arrested and charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), which carries a punishment of up to 10 years' imprisonment along with a fine.
