Apple Restructures Hardware Division Under Johny Srouji Amid Leadership Shift

Apple Restructures Hardware Division Under Johny Srouji Amid Leadership Shift

Apple is reshaping its hardware organization as part of a broader leadership transition, placing newly appointed Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji at the center of a streamlined structure designed to accelerate innovation and improve efficiency.

In an internal memo shared with employees on Monday, Srouji outlined a reorganization that brings together the company's hardware engineering and hardware technologies teams under a unified framework. The combined division will now operate across five primary areas: hardware engineering, silicon, advanced technologies, platform architecture, and program management.

The restructuring comes alongside a major leadership change, with longtime CEO Tim Cook preparing to transition into the role of executive chairman, while John Ternus is set to take over as chief executive officer in September.

Srouji emphasized confidence in the leadership transition, stating, "Those of us who have had the chance to work closely with John know how thoughtful and capable he is," and adding that Cook "made the very best choice for who should succeed him."

The reorganization is intended to simplify Apple's internal structure as the hardware division expands significantly, adding thousands of employees and taking on greater responsibility for the engineering of core products such as the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and other devices.

Under the new structure, Tom Marieb will lead hardware engineering, bringing his experience from Intel and his work at Apple overseeing product quality and hardware integrity. The silicon division will be headed by veteran executive Sri Santhanam, while Tim Millet will oversee platform architecture. Zongjian Chen will lead advanced technologies, and Donny Nordhues will manage program execution across the organization.

The move marks a return to an earlier organizational model used more than a decade ago, when Apple's hardware teams operated as a single unit under former hardware chief Bob Mansfield. That structure was later divided, allowing leaders like Ternus and Srouji to rise through separate divisions.

Srouji acknowledged the significance of the shift in his memo, writing: "As part of this transition, I've been asked to step into the role of Chief Hardware Officer and to combine the hardware technologies and hardware engineering teams under a single organisation."

He expressed optimism about the future, adding, "I am excited to bring these teams together, to integrate them further, and to help us innovate in an even bigger way than we already do."

Detailing the new leadership framework, Srouji said, "As we move forward, I have decided to organise most of the team primarily under five areas, with Tom Marieb leading hardware engineering, Sri Santhanam leading silicon across all of our products, Zongjian Chen leading advanced technologies, Tim Millet leading platform architecture, and Donny Nordhues leading EPM across the combined organisation."

He concluded by reinforcing confidence in Apple's workforce and direction: "I know this represents a meaningful change, but I am confident that it will be successful because of all of you."

With hardware and engineering now firmly positioned at the core of Apple's strategy, the company appears set to deepen integration across its product ecosystem while preparing for its next phase of innovation.
