The announcement of biennial Rajya Sabha elections for 24 seats across 10 states has accelerated candidate selection discussions within the BJP, with Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu emerging as a strong contender for another term in the Upper House.
The Election Commission has scheduled polling for June 18, while nominations will be accepted until June 8. The elections will cover vacancies in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Rajasthan.
According to party sources, the BJP is focusing on social and regional representation while finalising its list of nominees. Among the leaders whose Rajya Sabha terms are ending are Union Ministers George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu, along with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh.
Bittu, who currently represents Rajasthan in the Rajya Sabha, is widely expected to secure another term. BJP leadership reportedly views him as an important Sikh face and a key figure in the party's efforts to strengthen its presence in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
In Andhra Pradesh, discussions are underway regarding a possible Rajya Sabha seat allocation from alliance partner N. Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party as part of the broader NDA arrangement.
Several prominent leaders are also being considered for Rajya Sabha entry. In Manipur, former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is reportedly among the frontrunners for the state's lone seat.
Madhya Pradesh remains a key focus area, with names such as Narottam Mishra, Dheeraj Pateria, Arvind Bhadoria and former minister Ranjana Baghel under consideration. Party leaders are also exploring the possibility of fielding a tribal candidate to strengthen outreach among tribal communities.
In Jharkhand, where two seats are up for election, former Union Minister Arjun Munda and BJP leader Asha Lakra are among the names being discussed. However, the party may require support from additional legislators to comfortably secure victory.
The upcoming Rajya Sabha nominations are expected to offer important clues about the BJP's political strategy, leadership priorities and social representation plans ahead of several crucial state elections and organisational changes in the coming months.
