Delayed irrigation scheme cripples local farming

Rayagada: A group of farmers in Penta area under Rayagada Sadar block have raised concerns over prolonged delay in the implementation of a government-supported tubewell scheme, alleging that administrative inaction has left them struggling to sustain their agricultural activities.

According to a complaint submitted by the affected farmers, at least 17 beneficiaries had applied for irrigation support several years ago and deposited the required contribution, reportedly around Rs 20,000 each, as part of the scheme's conditions. The payments were made with the expectation that borewells would be installed within a reasonable time-frame, enabling assured irrigation for their fields.

However, despite repeated follow-ups over the years, the farmers claim that no progress has been made on the ground. They stated that while officials had assured them of action at different stages, the promised work has not materialised. They say the delay has now stretched across multiple cropping seasons.

Among those who have raised the issue are local farmers Kesab Rao and M Krishna Rao, who have highlighted the growing hardship faced by cultivators due to the continued absence of irrigation facilities.

The absence of irrigation has placed the farmers in a difficult position. In a region where agriculture is largely dependent on rainfall, the lack of a reliable water source has disrupted cultivation plans, reduced productivity, and added to financial hardship. Many of the affected families depend solely on farming for their livelihood.

The farmers have also expressed concern over the lack of clear communication from the authorities regarding the status of their applications. They have sought immediate intervention, urging the administration to either expedite the installation of the borewells or return the deposited amount in accordance with the scheme's provisions.
