Rajamahendravaram: Fire Service Week celebrations began on Tuesday under the aegis of the Fire Department with an aim to promote awareness on fire accident prevention among the public.
District Principal Judge Gandham Sunitha inaugurated the programme and said that a series of awareness activities would be conducted from April 14 to 20. She cautioned that even a small act of negligence could lead to major disasters and urged people to remain vigilant at all times. Stressing fire safety, she said that precautionary measures must be followed in homes, educational institutions and offices.
The inaugural programme was held at the Fire Station near Kotipalli Bus Stand, where the District Principal Judge received a guard of honour from fire personnel. On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, she paid floral tributes to the portrait of Dr BR Ambedkar.
An exhibition of firefighting equipment was also inaugurated. District Disaster Response and Fire Officer Ch Martin Luther King and Assistant District Fire Officer P Srinivas explained the usage of various equipment deployed during fire accidents and other emergencies. Pamphlets and wall posters aimed at creating public awareness were released. A rally of fire service vehicles was flagged off later. NCC cadets and NSS volunteers from Government Degree College, VT College and Rajiv Gandhi College participated in the awareness rally.
As part of the week-long celebrations, an awareness rally will be organised on Wednesday at 10 am from the Collector Camp Office, Y Junction, to Aryapuram Fire Station, said DFO Martin Luther King.
