Guntur: Guntur Municipal Corporation bagged a rare 'Gender Equality Mobilisation' award announced by United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SC-IAP) Project Workshop was held in Vijayawada on Monday. GMC commissioner K Mayur Ashok, along with GMC women workers, received this international award from director of the Central Swachh Bharat Mission Surabhi Malik.
This international recognition was received for the innovative policies implemented by GMC by linking women empowerment and environmental protection. As part of women empowerment, women were involved on a large scale in sanitation management. Along with the cities of Bhopal, Jaipur and Mysore, only Guntur and Vijayawada from Andhra Pradesh secured a place in this project.
Expressing happiness over receiving the international award, Mayur Ashok stated that he was dedicating this prestigious award to the workers of the Public Health Department of Guntur city, especially the women workers who work tirelessly day and night. He said that this honour received at the international level has increased the responsibility of GMC towards city cleanliness and environmental protection and added that efforts would be made to lead Guntur on a greater path of development in the future.
